Investment Management Services (IMS) is staffed by a team of investment professionals who are responsible for overseeing Manulife’s Common Investment Platform.
Using a stringent selection and review process called i-Watch, the team seeks to identify funds and fund managers that have the potential over the long-run to:
Deliver strong results through a variety of market cycles.
Adhere to their investment mandate.
The i-Watch process is a valuable resource and is truly unique because the criterion used to evaluate funds is based on quantitative factors (performance and risk characteristics) and qualitative factors (organization, people, process and philosophy).
The result is access to a broad array of best-of-class investment options chosen from the world’s leading asset managers and spanning every major asset class and investment style.
The Investment Management Services Department is currently looking for a dynamic individual to join their team as the Manager of Investment Research and Analysis. Reporting to the Director, Investment Management Services, the successful candidate will play a key role in selecting and monitoring investment managers as well as providing strategic support to Manulife’s various Canadian business units.
Responsibilities:
. Create and maintain various investment-related databases relating to domestic and foreign investment managers such as: qualitative profiles; performance history in various asset classes, etc.
. Produce investment manager monitoring reports on a quarterly, semi-annual and annual basis.
. Liaise with and perform in-depth quantitative and qualitative analyses on various domestic and foreign investment management organizations (which will translate into formal ratings and quarterly commentaries).
. Perform quantitative analysis on domestic and foreign capital markets.
. Coach and develop an analyst with whom mandate coverage will be shared
. Lead investment manager searches as required to support the implementation of the “Common Investment Platform”.
. Special projects and other ad-hoc duties as required.
. Liaise with and service the needs of IMS “clients” (i.e. the various areas of Canadian Division).
Qualifications
. Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
. Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
. Computer literacy in all standard software packages including MS Office and Lotus Notes.
. Familiarity with other software packages such as BARRA, CPMS, Morningstar Direct, Factset and MS Access will be helpful.
. Demonstrated project management skills.
. Ability to meet very tight deadlines.
. Ability to work independently, but also as part of a team.
. Coaching skills
. Ability to think “outside of the box”.
. Ability to deal effectively with uncertainty.
. Confidence to effectively question senior fund company executives and portfolio managers.
. Undergraduate university degree (honours or 4 yr.) in a quantitative and/or business discipline.
. CFA Designation
. Must have two to three years experience working with the investment management community (both domestic and foreign).
. A graduate degree (such as an MBA) would also be an asset.
